Dogs and cats are not a natural part of the coyote’s diet. They eat small animals (voles, shrews, rabbits and mice), vegetables, nuts and carrion. However, small dogs and cats could be easy prey. Homeowners should not leave small animals unattended.
Don't be alarmed if you see a coyote in the wild, but do be alert.
Appreciate Coyotes From A Distance. Stay at least 150 feet (45 meters) or more from the animal.
Keep Coyotes Wary. If you are approached, make yourself look bigger by putting your arms up, and make loud noises until the coyote retreats.
Supervise Pets. Walk dogs on a leash and keep cats inside for safety.
Do Not Feed Coyotes. Keeping coyotes wild is the key to coexistence. Their life and your safety depend upon coyotes remaining naturally wary of people.
